Happy Juneteenth - June 19th
Dear Families: Today is June 19th, (also known as Juneteenth) and marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States. On June 17, 2021, it officially became a federal holiday. Our school community recognizes the importance of this day for African Americans and all people living in the United States. To learn about this day with your children, here is a read-aloud of All Different Now: Juneteenth, the First Day of Freedom by Angela Johnson. Warmly, HMM Staff

October Safety Meeting debrief
Happy Monday, Once a month Sulay, Administration, the custodian, members of the parent association, Mr. Ortiz, Ms. Acosta, our nurse and teachers meet to discuss ways to keep our school safe. Below is what we discussed last Wednesday. If you have any questions, please respond in the comments: Agenda: 1. Drills update We have had 3 evacuation drills, practicing what to do if we need to evacuate the school. We also have had one soft lock down, where we prepared for an event that would require us to lock classroom doors. We learned that 3 rooms require keys and custodian is preparing keys for us. 2. important events: October 26th-October 28th is our school's fall festival. Recess on those days will be canceled so that the yard can be used for students to pick up pumpkins. Coloring sheets and uno is prepared for students to play while they are indoors. 3. A scenario: At a typical meeting we will discuss what to do in a particular emergency. On this day we discussed what to do if there is smoke coming out of a classroom. We the protocol for the building response team and identified the need to review roles and remind staff that students should be bringing jackets out during an evacuation. In the case of an actual evacuation it is likely we would need to be outside for an extended period of time. For this reason we should leave all belongings but take a jacket outside. 4. Next steps: During our next safety meeting we will discuss answers to questions during the scenario including how identifying where the fire extinguishers and fire blankets are located. Furthermore we discussed the need to review how to operate the fire safety equipment.
